We love the idea of the self-made sporting superstar. One athlete. One incredible performance. One name on the scoreboard.

But how "individual" is individual success in sport, really?

Behind an elite athlete can be an entire team of coaches, physios, psychologists, nutritionists, doctors, managers and performance staff. And before any of them? There were often parents driving to training, coaches staying late, teachers making allowances, teammates pushing them and people quietly helping long before there was a medal, contract or sponsor.

In this episode of Almost Pro Bites, we ask: How much of an athlete's success actually relies on the people around them?

Because sometimes the difference isn't just talent or who wanted it more. Access to the right coaching, facilities, advice, opportunities and support can fundamentally change an athlete's journey.

And there's another side to it.

What happens when the people around an athlete aren't helping? Toxic coaching, parental pressure, poor advice and unhealthy sporting environments can damage confidence, derail development and, in some cases, contribute to athletes walking away altogether.

The medal might belong to one person.

But the journey rarely does.
